AOS at The Hidden Noise

21 Feb

Four snapshot views of the excellent Objections to an Empty Mind exhibition of works by Austin Osman Spare and Richard Brown at The Hidden Noise gallery, 1st Floor, 24 Hayburn Crescent, Glasgow G11 5AY.

Tucked away in a beautiful residential flat in West Glasgow, this exhibition presents a modest but extremely fine selection of Spare’s work, including examples of his sidereal portraits, automata, spectral landscapes and pastels.

This is a first public outing for some of the paintings, and presents a rare chance to see Spare’s art in the kind of home setting that they are most usually found in. The images have been sensitively hung by curators Sandra Ross and Shireen Taylor with plenty of room to breathe, shine and pullulate.

Also on display is Richard Brown’s alchemical creation, The Electrochemical Glass (as seen in an earlier form on the cover of SAJ3 in 2006) – which neatly encapsulates the magic of art, science and the imagination, all resonant with Spare’s own concerns.

If you’re in Glasgow between now and 17th March, do make time to visit The Hidden Noise.
